The product category structure of your ecommerce store goes a long way in determining how successful your ecommerce business will eventually turn out to be. This is one of those many “little” things that often escape the attention of ecommerce website developers. The ease of navigation of your ecommerce website has a major role to play when it comes to holding on to the attention of the online customers. If they are facing difficulties in getting around your website, then chances are that they will lose the interest to purchase your commodities.
Your ecommerce product category structure should be built in a way to facilitate easy and quick access to all your products. The equation does not get any more straightforward than this. The more simplified the navigation on your website is, the higher will be your online sales.
With that being said, here are 4 things you need to remember when building/revamping your ecommerce product category structure.
1) Display a Parent Category
Labels and headers do not necessarily work in today’s ecommerce environment. One of the reasons for that is because it gets in the way of letting ecommerce shoppers carry out quick and easy searches. The better alternative is to put up a parent category that is clickable. In other words, offer a drop down menu for the visitors to make use of.
2) Place Sub Categories
Placing clickable sub categories just below the parent category is another way of making user navigation easy and uncomplicated. In certain cases, the sub category may come under the fold of multiple parent categories. If you are faced with such a situation, then simply put that particular recurring sub category under multiple parent categories. This will eliminate confusion.
3) Introduce New Arrivals Category
In almost every case, you want your new arrivals to do a lot better than your older products. This will not be possible unless you channel enough hype and attention toward these new products. A simple way of achieving this is by creating an entirely new parent category by the name of New Arrivals, which will include the names of the new products as its sub categories. This way, the visitor does not have to look all around the website to pick out the new arrivals.
4) Display “Recently Viewed Products”
This is similar to the History section of your internet browser or your YouTube account. When shopping online, people go through a myriad of different products. When searching for new products, they may often lose the link to one of the products that they had stumbled upon before. If you do not have a “recently viewed products” option on your ecommerce website, you will prevent the online shopper from going back to a previously searched product and making the purchase. This is indeed a terrible way to lose out on your online sales.
If you follow these simple tips, you will be able to raise the effectiveness and usefulness of your ecommerce website. Implementing these changes will lead to drastic increase in online sales and keep you stress free about your ecommerce website.
