BlackBerry opts out of consumer market

Research in Motion (RIM), the company behind BlackBerry smartphones, has announced it is to withdraw from the consumer market to concentrate on its business customers.

The company has struggled to compete with rivals Google and Apple in the consumer space and recently recorded a three-month net loss of £78 million.

Thorsten Heins, RIM CEO, said, “We can’t do everything ourselves, but we can do what we’re good at.

“We believe that BlackBerry cannot succeed if we tried to be everybody’s darling and all things to all people. Therefore, we plan to build on our strength.”

Concentrating on its original market will allow BlackBerry to focus its efforts but Apple and Google will be celebrating the development, especially as they will both be waiting to continue battling RIM in the corporate sector.
