Businesses forced to acknowledge gender pay gap

UK businesses will be required to reveal pay difference between male and female employees in new league tables announced today (12 Feb).

The new rules will apply to companies with over 250 employees and will affect around 8,000 employers around the UK.

The regulations will come into effect from April 2017, with the first league table set to be published 12 months later.

The plans were announced by Women and Equalities Minister Nicky Morgan, with companies required to publish the results each year on their own websites.

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the gender pay gap was 9.4 per cent in April 2015, compared to 9.6 per cent in 2014.

Morgan said: “In recent years we’ve seen the best employers make ground breaking strides in tackling gender inequality. But the job won’t be complete until we see the talents of women and men recognised equally and fairly in every workplace.

“That’s why I am announcing a raft of measures to support women in their careers from the classroom to the boardroom, leaving nowhere for gender inequality to hide.”

She added: “At the same time I’m calling on women across Britain to use their position as employees and consumers to demand more from businesses, ensuring their talents are given the recognition and reward they deserve.”
