Cannes Lions creates award for work that shatters gender stereotypes

Cannes Lions has announced the ‘Glass Lion’, a new award that recognises work that challenges gender bias and stereotypical images rooted in marketing messages.

The new award, the ‘Lion for Change’ is supported by LeanIn.org and is part of an ongoing commitment to positively impact the course of communications.

In addition, the Glass Lion will seek to promote more inclusive, gender-aware forms of brand communication.

Cannes Lions will donate all proceeds from the entry fees to a programme that promotes a gender-neutral landscape.

Founder and CEO of IfWeRanTheWorld/MakeLoveNotPorn, Cindy Gallop, has been appointed as the inaugural Glass Lions’ jury president.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled about the introduction of the Glass Lion, which demonstrates Cannes Lions’ commitment to ensuring that both our industry and the work we create not only more accurately reflects the world around us, but actively changes it for the better,” said Gallop.

“I am honoured to be jury president, and look forward, together with the jury, to celebrating work that will set the gold standard for creative and sociocultural change.”
