NEWS: Facebook launches ‘Instant Articles’

Facebook has introduced ‘Instant Articles’, a new product which allows publishers to create fast and interactive articles on the social media site.

Instant Articles aims to reduce the loading time of web articles by housing them on the site. Currently it takes eight minutes for these types of articles to load, but the new feature promises to open pages instantly.

Along with a faster experience, the product includes a range of interactive features such as auto-play videos, interactive maps, audio captions and the ability to like and comment on individual parts of an article.

Publishers will be able to sell ads in their articles, while data and traffic will be tracked through ComScore as well as other analytics tools.

For the launch, the social network site worked with nine publishers, including The New York Times, National Geographic, The Guardian and BBC News.

Chris Cox, chief product officer at Facebook, said: “Fundamentally, this is a tool that enables publishers to provide a better experience for their readers on Facebook.

“Instant Articles lets them deliver fast, interactive articles while maintaining control of their content and business models.”
