SOCIAL MEDIA NEWS: The year that was #2011

The latest instalment of Twitter's year in review series throws light on what we’ve all been searching for and hastagging over the last 12 months.

Despite its understandable bias towards US trends, this series of lists, blog commentary and attractively-presented overviews should be considered essential reading for anyone with an interest in social media.

From genuinely significant events such as the Arab Spring uprisings, the fall of Colonel Gaddafi, and Japan’s earthquake, through to less important issues such as where to find McDonald’s McLobster rolls (ed: not available in the UK, apparently), it is testament to Twitter’s increasing relevance in society that you’re unlikely to find a more representative assessment of what the world’s digitally mobilised population have been talking about this year.
