Facebook launches hashtags

Facebook has launched clickable hashtags.

Similar to other services such as Instagram and Twitter, hashtags on Facebook allow users to add context to a post or indicate that it is part of a larger discussion. By clicking on a hashtag in Facebook, users will see a feed of what other people and pages are saying about that topic.

This feature will allow users to search for a specific hashtag from their search bar;  click on hashtags that originate on other services, such as Instagram, and compose posts directly from the hashtag feed and search results. Plus users can control the audience for your posts, including those with hashtags.

This is the first step in the social network’s plan to help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations.

Greg Lindley, product manager at Facebook, said in a blog post: “To date, there has not been a simple way to see the larger view of what’s happening or what people are talking about.

“To bring these conversations more to the forefront, we will be rolling out a series of features that surface some of the interesting discussions people are having about public events, people, and topics. As a first step, we are beginning to roll out hashtags on Facebook.”

Facebook said that it will continue to roll out more communication features in the coming months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights.
