Facebook passes one billion monthly users

Facebook now has more than one billion monthly active users; one in seven people worldwide.

The almost inevitable news comes at a testing time for the social networking goliath, following its less than textbook entry onto the stock market, and bad press regarding its approach to user privacy and ad handling.

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, was understandably not focusing on these issues however on a post on his timeline today.

He said, “This morning, there are more than one billion people using Facebook actively each month.

“If you’re reading this: thank you for giving me and my little team the honour of serving you.

“Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life.

“I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too.”

Facebook published a slew of stats about social data generated by its one billion users, with some of the most-noteworthy being: 1.13 trillion likes, 219 billion photos and 17 billion location check-ins.

The company also produced a video to mark the occasion, called ‘Things that connect us’

Once the celebratory champagne has been glugged, Facebook’s investors will be eager to learn more about how the company plans to turn such stats into greater profit and increased share value.
