Google is consolidating storage between Drive, Gmail and Google+, now offering users 15GB of free storage shared across all three platforms, but have shut down SMS search.
Previously users were restricted to 10GB of free storage in Gmail, and 5GB for Google+ and Google Drive, and unable to upgrade Gmail storage past 25GB. Monday’s unified storage announcement removes the cap.
Clay Bavo, Google’s director of product management, said: “Life gets a bit easier when your Google products work well together—whether that’s inserting a Drive file into an email or sharing a photo from Drive on Google+. As this experience becomes more seamless, separate storage doesn’t make as much sense anymore.”
Meanwhile, Google has discontinued its mobile search service with no advanced warning.
Google SMS Search let users send search queries and receive results via a text to Google.
A spokesperson for Google explained: “Closing products always involves tough choices, but we do think very hard about each decision and its implications for our users. Streamlining our services enables us to focus on creating beautiful technology that will improve people’s lives.”
