Microsoft launches tablet range

Microsoft is aiming to claw back market share from Apple and Google following the launch of its new range of ‘Surface’ tablet computers.

All boasting the new Windows 8 operating system, the – as yet un-priced – machines are designed to re-establish Microsoft as a company leading with innovation. The devices will ship with accompanying detachable keyboards.

Steve Ballmer, Microsoft chief executive, revealed the tablets at a press event in Los Angeles yesterday and industry analysts have given them a fairly warm welcome.

Though you can find cliché-laden news articles littered around the internet, the only way new devices can become ‘iPad killers’ is if they have competitive app support. This is yet to be seen.
