The Tao of Twitter – Changing your life & business 140 characters at a time

The Tao of Twitter

Author: Mark W.Schaefer

Publisher: McGraw-Hill Professional

Reviewer: Edward Bass, social media manager, Amaze

Boasting the ability to ‘decipher the confusing world of Twitter’ in less than two hours, Mark W. Schaefer’s The Tao of Twitter is an energetic guide to the social media platform that makes for an engaging read.

Having set the scene with a history of his own experiences, Schaefer begins to introduce the reader to the benefits of Twitter, as well as the content businesses can deliver through it, using real-life examples with clearly defined results. He also makes some very astute points about using a qualitative (as opposed to quantitative) approach to the results Twitter can offer – something I’d urge businesses everywhere to at least consider.

Despite the meditative nature of the book’s title, Schaefer doesn’t just dwell on the more thoughtful aspects of the platform, but also concentrates on instructing the user in the basics, such as creating an account, building a network and defining your tone of voice – even though the latter is often slightly unhelpful ‘just be yourself!’. This approach, combined with his musings on the nature of Twitter certainly makes a case for just about any business adopting the channel.

While I have to admit I was fairly sceptical about the warranty of a book that ties in a popular social platform with ancient eastern mysticism, I did warm to it, and Schaefer’s enthusiastic approach to teaching Twitter and
its benefits.

I’d certainly recommend it to anyone looking to better understand the platform and even experienced users looking for an interesting reminder as to why the platform is so important to their world.
