In a recent interview at the Milken Institute conference BlackBerry‘s CEO, Thorsten Heins, questioned the future of the tablet computer and claimed that the device’s popularity will be short lived.
The chief executive said: “In five years I don’t think there’ll be a reason to have a tablet anymore. Maybe a big screen in your workspace, but not a tablet as such. Tablets themselves are not a good business model.
“In five years, I see BlackBerry to be the absolute leader in mobile computing, that’s what we’re aiming for. I want to gain as much market share as I can, but not by being a copycat.”
This is a clear indication the company may not release their next tablet, following the criticism and low sales of the PlayBook back in 2011.
The interview revealed that Heins is currently rethinking whether to offer larger devices in addition to their new smartphones to engineer a sales recovery.
