Twitter considering extending 140-character limit to 10,000

Twitter is contemplating changing its character limit from 140 to 10,000 in a bid to attract more users, according to Re/code.

Twitter’s co-founder Jack Dorsey lent potential credence to the rumour in a tweet discussing the merits of longer character limits.

He said: “We’ve spent a lot of time observing what people are doing on Twitter, and we see them taking screenshots of text and tweeting it.”

He added: “Instead, what if that text… was actually text. Text that could be searched. Text that could be highlighted. That’s more utility and power.”

According to ReCode, the new feature will be launched at the end of Q1, although the date and exact character limit could fluctuate.

However, the Financial Times anncounced that Twitter shares have fallen three per cent to $21.89 since the speculation began.

With the social network’s growth having continued to decline over the past couple of years, it seems this attempt at reviving user growth may well backfire.

Our Twitter poll below shows most people are unconvinced by the proposed changes. What do you think? Get involved via the comments section.
