Twitter testing ‘buy’ button

Twitter is testing a ‘buy’ button, that will let users buy products directly from a tweet.

The social network will be testing this new feature for a small group of US users, including brands, nonprofit organisations and celebrities.

If a user clicks the ‘buy’ button they will be given additional information and be prompted to enter shipping and payment details. Once they have entered and confirmed the order information is sent to the seller for delivery.

This information will then be encrypted and stored so in future Twitter users can buy without re-entering all this information.

Tarun Jain, group product manager at Twitter, said in a blog post: ‘This is an early step in our building functionality into Twitter to make shopping from mobile devices convenient and easy, hopefully even fun.

‘Users will get access to offers and merchandise they can’t get anywhere else and can act on them right in the Twitter apps for Android and iOS; sellers will gain a new way to turn the direct relationship they build with their followers into sales.’
