UK digital ad spend up

The Internet Advertising Bureau UK’s (IAB) latest Digital Adspend report has revealed UK digital ad spend has hit a record six-month high of £3 billion.

The research, conducted by PwC, reveals advertising on the internet and mobile phones increased, like-for-like, by 17.5 per cent to £3.04 billion in the first half of 2013 – up £425 million from £2.61 billion in the first half of 2012.

Commenting on the news, Rupert Staines, MD UK & Europe of enterprise advertising platform RadiumOne said: “Digital advertising is one of the largest growth areas in business and that’s made even clearer from the IAB’s figures released today showing that digital ad spend has gone up by 17.5 per cent to over £3 billion in the first half of 2013.

While we’ve seen increased advertising on social platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, some of the most significant spend is going on beyond the walled gardens of these platforms – there’s an internet of social sharing and advertising out there.”

On future predictions, Staines predicts “Dark social” – traffic that cannot be attributed to individual users – to be a key growth area in the next 12 months.
