Xero launches ‘Dexter the Digital Tax Advisor’ to raise awareness of new legislation

Accounting platform Xero has created a cartoon called Dexter to become the face of digitisation in the tax industry in light of the Making Tax Digital legislation.

From April 2019, every VAT-registered business above the £85k threshold in the UK will be required to be digital and file their tax through MTD compatible cloud software. However research by Xero has found 25% of small business owners are still unaware of the change.

Dexter the Digital Tax Advisor – animated by Oscar-nominated cartoonists Alison Snowden and David Fine – will aim to demonstrate the efficiency of being digital and how easy it is to make the switch. He will star in a series of short films released in the lead-up to deadline day.

Damon Anderson, director of partner and product at Xero said: “Making Tax Digital is going to usher a new era of accountancy, encouraging the technology adoption and working practices to bring the profession into the 21st century.

“Our data has shown that there are huge numbers of small businesses who still feel unprepared for the leglislation, so we’ve created Dexter the Digital Tax Advisor to be the voice of Making Tax Digital for VAT. It will help accountants and small businesses on their digital journey and make tax less taxing.”
