B2B directory Yell is to sponsor a competition being run by advisory networking site Horsesmouth.co.uk to find the UK’s top small business mentor. The individual that will ultimately be named as having the âM’ factor will receive a £1000 cash prize as well as the chance to attend a private mentoring breakfast with a business idol of their choice.
The competition, which is new for 2008, was developed by Horsesmouth founder MT (Mary Teresa) Rainey who came up with the idea to recognise the role that mentors often play in helping small business in the UK. Visitors to the site are being asked to nominate a mentor who has provided inspiration, help and support when seeking advice on important issues including how to set up a business, change career direction or build better working relationships. The mentors who make it onto the shortlist will be judged on three main criteria; friendliness, helpfulness and timeliness.
The judging panel will include Maxine Benson, co-founder of Everywoman, Helen Stevenson, chief marketing officer at Yell, and Professor David Clutterbuck, co-founder of the European Mentoring Centre.
The competition – officially named the Yell Small Business Mentor of the Year Awards – is part of a wider joint initiative called the Yell Mentoring Works Awards in which mentoring in all areas of an individual’s professional and personal life is acknowledged and rewarded.
